Chapter Ten

In one of his letters Mark mentioned attending one of the dances in Silverbeck Village Hall with her brothers Peter and Allan and Lynn Tindal, but it was Peter, in one of his rare letter writing phases, who had mentioned that Mark had danced nearly every dance with Irene Wilkins. He went on to ask if she remembered the Wilkins and that made her smile. Everyone in Silverbeck knew the Wilkins. Neither Mrs Wilkins nor Irene allowed anyone to forget they were the largest tenant farmers on Lord Hanley’s estate. In her heart Marie was dismayed to realise how dejected she felt to hear Mark was as attracted to someone else, especially a girl as shallow as Irene Wilkins, yet she herself had insisted they were only friends.

Of course, Peter went on, Mark didn’t know anyone else and Irene Wilkins was quick to introduce herself now she knows Mark owns land of his own. He had a couple of dances with Meg. In fact he seemed keen to talk to her, even though she is married. He danced with Lynn a couple of times but our Allan is a bit possessive in that quarter.

Marie could almost hear Peter chuckling as he wrote. He didn’t pay much attention to girls yet.

Later that night when Marie lay in bed her thoughts returned to Peter’s letter. Mark was a free agent so why should it bother her if he brought back a wife. She had no claim on him, they were only friends, even when he did insist he couldn’t manage without her. He was a thoroughly nice person though and she hoped he would get someone better than the snooty Irene Wilkins. Are you sure you’re not a bit jealous? A little voice whispered in her head.

Maggie decided they wouldn’t take Marguerite to get Rina home from hospital.

‘She gets fidgety and sleepy by the time we’re coming home and she can be tiring. It will make more room for Rina and me in the back of the car too. I have made her a new dress though. Here it is Marie. I thought you might dress her in it after she’s had an afternoon nap then she will look fresh and pretty to welcome her mama.’

‘Oh Aunt Maggie, that’s lovely,’ Marie exclaimed holding up the small dress.

‘Och, that’s nothing. It’s only a wee muslin dress.’

‘You’re so clever and so modest,’ Marie chuckled and hugged her aunt. ‘Rina will be thrilled when she sees her.’

‘Aye she’ll get a surprise when she sees what a fine job you have made to that old bed too. It’s like new since you rubbed it all down and painted it.’

‘It’s the new mattress Uncle Jim got the saddler to make. It fits perfectly. It must be comfortable because Marguerite has slept in it for three nights now and so long as she has Raggy doll and Teddy she goes to bed and settles without a murmur.’

‘What have you done with the cot then?’

‘I folded it up and put it in the box room.
